G7 Hiroshima Process on Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) – Towards G7 Common Understanding On Generative AI

Last May, the leaders of the G7 nations gathered in the city of Hiroshima, Japan, where they identified the topics to be addressed under the banner of the “Hiroshima Artificial Intelligence Initiative.” They called for the prompt evaluation of opportunities and challenges related to innovative artificial intelligence. In a report published by the OECD on this subject, the results of a survey designed to guide G7 discussions on common policy priorities regarding innovative artificial intelligence are presented. Additionally, the report provides a general overview of the development of innovative artificial intelligence over time and across countries.

Within the context of the findings presented in the report, the following points are highlighted: (1) Innovative artificial intelligence has quickly entered the public agenda, (2) Growth in research related to innovative artificial intelligence, including open-source code development, has outpaced increases in investments, (3) The rapid progress in innovative artificial intelligence stems from its expected potential to enhance productivity, foster innovation, encourage entrepreneurship, and develop solutions for global challenges, (4) The potential benefits of innovative artificial intelligence come with accompanying risks, (5) Faced with the rapid escalation of these risks, managing and mitigating them have become top priorities for G7 governments, (6) These countries have evaluated responses to innovative artificial intelligence-related challenges as well as policy gaps, and (7) G7 members concur on the need to provide effective tools for security, quality control, capacity, and trust-building in the context of innovative artificial intelligence.
